01 · The Application

Why BBQ grill igniters fail outdoors.

🔥
BLK igniter in gas BBQ grill burner assembly
Replace with product photo

A BBQ grill igniter has to survive moisture, UV, grease vapor, cold starts, and mechanical vibration. This is a more demanding outdoor environment than any residential gas furnace — and most Al₂O₃ igniters are only rated for indoor duty.

The BLK sealed Si₃N₄ element is impervious to moisture ingress and handles outdoor temperature extremes from −30°C to +60°C without performance degradation.

Si₃N₄ vs Al₂O₃ for

outdoor grill duty

★ Recommended
Silicon Nitride (Si₃N₄)
BLK series · 100K+ cycles · sealed element
  • Moisture-proof sealed element — no ingress failure in outdoor service
  • 100,000+ cycle life — 3–5× longer than Al₂O₃ in identical duty
  • 3-second heat-up to 1,100°C — reliable first-attempt ignition
  • −30°C cold start rated — tested, not estimated
  • UL Recognized + CE marked — both markets from one SKU
Also Available
Alumina (Al₂O₃)
Standard duty · lower initial cost
  • Lower unit cost — 20–30% less per igniter at same volume
  • Suitable for dry indoor environments — not rated for outdoor
  • Higher moisture failure rate in outdoor/BBQ applications
  • Shorter field life in high-humidity and thermal-shock outdoor duty
Why leading grill OEMs switch to BLK

Fewer warranty returns,
longer outdoor seasons.

03 · Why Outdoor Igniters Fail

The 3 outdoor failure modes.

All three are more common in Al₂O₃ than Si₃N₄ — and all three are caused or accelerated by the outdoor environment.

01
Moisture ingress cracking
Water enters micro-cracks in the Al₂O₃ insulator, freezes overnight, and fractures the element on first ignition of the season. Si₃N₄'s dense microstructure is impervious to moisture ingress.
Si₃N₄ fix → sealed element, no exposed ceramic porosity to absorb moisture.
02
Grease carbonisation overheating
Cooking grease deposits on the igniter surface and carbonises at ignition temperature — forming an insulating layer that causes local overheating and cracking. Si₃N₄'s higher thermal conductivity (20 W/m·K) dissipates heat faster.
Si₃N₄ fix → higher thermal conductivity prevents hot-spot formation under carbon deposits.
03
UV/ozone seal degradation
Organic sealing compounds in standard igniters degrade under outdoor UV and ozone within 3–5 years, allowing moisture entry. BLK's all-ceramic seal contains no organic materials.
Si₃N₄ fix → no organic sealing compounds — UV/ozone immune.
04 · Engineering FAQ

Questions from grill engineers.

Can CN-300 be used as an igniter for BBQ grill replacement projects?
Yes. The CN-300 can be supplied as either an igniter for gas BBQ grills or a direct drop-in replacement, depending on voltage, mounting flange thickness, lead wire type, and connector type requirements.
Does BLK fit my existing igniter socket?
Send your current part number or a drawing — we match mounting flange geometry, lead wire, and connector type. Compatibility data for major North American and European grill platforms on file.
What voltage for NA vs EU grills?
North America: 120V AC (BLK-HS5-120 S). Europe: 230V AC (BLK-HS5-220 S). 12V DC for battery-ignition portable grills (BLK-HS1-24 S).
Can you supply weatherproofed connectors?
Yes — weather-sealed silicone boot connector assemblies as factory-fitted option. Specify at time of order.
What is the cold-start performance at −30°C?
BLK insulation resistance maintains ≥100 MΩ at 500V DC down to −40°C. Cold-start ignition from −30°C ambient validated per IEC 60335.
Minimum order?
No MOQ on stock SKUs — 48h dispatch. Custom geometry: 500 units minimum.
