Commercial boilers run continuously through heating season, firing multiple times per hour in modulating control systems. The duty cycle is 5–10× residential — only Si₃N₄ and SiC igniters can withstand this reliably.

Large commercial burners also require higher surface temperatures for reliable pilot light-off — SiC at 1,500°C provides the ignition energy margin for large-burner combustion airflow.

Commercial duty cycles destroy standard residential-rated Al₂O₃ igniters within months. These are the three mechanisms.

SiC for large burner cross-sections requiring 1,500°C surface temperature for reliable light-off. Si₃N₄ for standard commercial duty where 1,100°C is sufficient — higher cycle life at lower cost.
What cycle life in commercial service?
Si₃N₄: 100,000+ cycles. At 50,000 cycles/year, this is 2+ years — vs 3–6 months for Al₂O₃ in the same application.
