01 · The Application

Why gas oven igniters fail in high-grease, high-cycle duty.

Replace with product photo

Gas ovens and cooktops expose igniters to grease vapour, food acids, and high-frequency thermal cycling conditions, which may damage them over time. Commercial kitchen ranges have even higher duty cycle — up to 200+ activations per day — as well as direct grease splash.

The CN-300 compact series uses a sealed Si₃N₄ element and a smaller profile optimized for gas cooktop igniter geometry, maintaining 100,000+ cycle life in demanding cooking environments.

Si₃N₄ vs Al₂O₃ for

oven and cooktop igniters

★ Recommended
Silicon Nitride (Si₃N₄)
BLK compact · 100K+ cycles · grease-resistant
  • Grease-carbonisation resistant — high thermal conductivity prevents hot-spot under carbon deposits
  • 8–10 year residential cooking life — vs 2–4yr for Al₂O₃
  • Compact profile for cooktop burner recess integration
  • NSF certified for commercial kitchen food service equipment
  • Food acid resistant — dense Si₃N₄ resists acetic/citric acid from cooking vapours
Also Available
Alumina (Al₂O₃)
Standard · adequate for low-duty cooking
  • Lower cost — suitable for low-frequency cooking
  • Adequate for under 5 ignitions/day cooking duty
  • Grease carbonisation overheating — primary failure mode in cooking
  • 2–4yr typical life in standard residential cooking duty

03 · Cooking Igniter Failure Modes

Why cooking igniters fail early.

Cooking environments combine failure modes not present in other gas appliances — all three are more severe in Al₂O₃.

01
Grease carbonisation overheating
Grease deposits carbonise at ignition temperature, forming an insulating layer that prevents heat dissipation — causing local overheating and cracking. Al₂O₃'s lower thermal conductivity (3 W/m·K) makes it more susceptible.
Si₃N₄ fix → thermal conductivity 20 W/m·K (7× Al₂O₃) prevents hot-spot formation under carbon deposits.
02
Food acid surface attack
Cooking vapours contain acetic, citric, and hydrochloric acids that slowly attack exposed ceramic surfaces over years of service.
Si₃N₄ fix → dense microstructure (>98% theoretical density) resists acid penetration. No exposed grain boundaries.
03
Physical impact from cooking
Dropped utensils, splatter impact, and cleaning abrasion are common in kitchen environments.
Si₃N₄ fix → fracture toughness 6–7 MPa·m½ vs 3–4 MPa·m½ for Al₂O₃. Significantly better impact resistance.
04 · Engineering FAQ

Questions from appliance engineers.

NSF certification for commercial kitchen?
NSF/ANSI 4 (commercial cooking equipment) certified variants available. Lead time 8–12 weeks from design freeze.
Compact profile for cooktop integration?
Yes — Ø6mm element diameter, 15–25mm active length for standard cooktop burner recesses. Custom profiles to drawing with 6-week lead time.
Can CN-300 be used as a gas oven igniter replacement?
Yes. CN-300 can be configured for use as a gas oven or gas cooktop igniter replacement. Send us your current part number and other information, such as voltage, mounting size, active length, lead wire type, and connector type.
