HVAC ignition,
heating season after season.

Si₃N₄ HVAC igniters for rooftop units, packaged HVAC systems, and heat pumps with gas backup. Seasonal storage, harsh outdoor installation conditions, and 10-year equipment lifetime targets make Si₃N₄ the preferred hot-surface igniter material.

01 · The Application

HVAC igniters must survive storage and cold starts.

Rooftop HVAC units often sit dormant during the summer, exposed to UV light, moisture, and temperature fluctuations. At their initial autumn startup, HVAC igniters must perform after months of thermal cycling and potential exposure to condensate. Si₃N₄ igniters make an ideal cold-start solution after seasonal storage.

Rooftop access can be expensive. An HVAC igniter failure could cost between $400 and $800 in labor charges alone, making a 10-year lifespan for these igniters an attractive ROI case for building managers and facilities engineers.

HVAC Igniters

★ Recommended
Silicon Nitride (Si₃N₄)
BLK · 100K+ cycles · 10-year rooftop life
  • 10-year field life — matches HVAC equipment design life
  • −40°C cold-start performance — after summer storage
  • No pre-conditioning required — straight from storage to ignition
  • UV and ozone immune — all-ceramic seal, no organic compounds
  • Resistance stability ±5% — compatible with self-test control boards
Also Available
Alumina (Al₂O₃)
Standard duty · not rated for outdoor rooftop
  • Lower unit cost — 20–30% less
  • Adequate for indoor residential duty only
  • Fails in 3–5yr — means one replacement per equipment life
  • UV/moisture seal degradation — organic seals fail outdoors in 3–5yr

03 · HVAC Igniter Failure Modes

Why rooftop igniters fail in service.

Rooftop installation adds failure modes not present in indoor residential applications — all three are more severe in Al₂O₃ than Si₃N₄.

01
Autumn cold-start thermal shock
After summer storage at +60°C, the igniter cold-starts into −10°C ambient on first heating call. This gradient is more severe than any residential indoor application — Al₂O₃ commonly fails on first-season start-up after storage.
Si₃N₄ fix → cold-start performance validated from −40°C. No pre-conditioning or warm-up cycle required.
02
UV and ozone seal degradation
Rooftop installation exposes insulator seals to UV and ozone year-round. Standard organic seals degrade within 3–5 years, allowing moisture entry.
Si₃N₄ fix → all-ceramic seal. No organic compounds to degrade. UV/ozone immune for the full equipment life.
03
Rooftop fan vibration fatigue
Condenser fan vibration transmits through sheet metal to the igniter mounting. Combined with thermal cycling, this causes fatigue cracking at the element/insulator junction after 3–5 years.
Si₃N₄ fix → higher fracture toughness. Vibration fatigue crack growth rate 5–10× slower than Al₂O₃.
04 · Engineering FAQ

Questions from HVAC design engineers.

Is CN-300 compatible with HVAC ignition modules and control boards?
CN-300 can be configured for HVAC ignition systems that use resistance-based pre-ignition checks. Standard 120V and 230V versions are available, with custom resistance values for OEM control boards or ignition modules.
What resistance value at ambient?
BLK-HS5-120 S: ~48Ω at 25°C. BLK-HS5-220 S: ~176Ω. Used by HVAC control boards for pre-ignition resistance check. Custom resistance values available.
Can you support staged ignition in multi-zone HVAC?
Yes — resistance matching ±3% across a batch for simultaneous ignition in staged multi-burner HVAC systems. Specify matched resistance at time of order.
Lead time for custom HVAC configurations?
Standard 120V/230V: stock, 48h dispatch. Custom resistance/voltage: 6–8 weeks. Custom geometry: 8–12 weeks.
